Modern Pop Music

I just found this quote from one of the quieter members of my Junior music section, summarizing all pop music.
"He loved me...
he doesn't love me anymore...
and I don't care."

studere, ambulare, incedere

How weird. Right now, I not only have a good excuse for perusing a message board, I actually get graded on how thoroughly I use it. I'm in an online nutrition class and that is one of the modes of evaluation.

I'm taking human biology, which seems (so far) like a pretty low-level course. It should be pretty fun in a low-key way, though sometimes low-level doesn't mean easier, just more little hoops to jump through. We'll see.

I have o. chem II, which should be pretty straightforward, although I haven't started it yet.

I also started auditing ballet course yesterday. I'm glad not to have to worry about grades for that one! It's totally unlike anything I've done before, so it should be good for growth.

My physics class was cancelled, so I've requested to try to earn the credit by a challenge exam. I haven't heard back yet, but studying for it will be a lot of work (and probably a pretty productive way to go about it all).

The Walk for Life was really good, with some good company keeping me from emotional shipwreckness (not caused by the walk). I got home and crashed for 2 hours of sleep before leaving for DC- The March for Life was much colder and much more hectic than SF's from my point of view... because SF probably had fewer people, west coast mentality, and didn't end in the middle of the street right before rush hour. We did run into some people at the March, though- Henry (on purpose), Moira's sister (accidentally), and some Sisters we know (as expected).

And speaking of all this pro-life stuff, I'm going to go down in a few minutes to watch EWTN's Life on the Rock show and see if any familiar people show up.

Alphabetical files and egg nog

Yay! I finally got my mp3 player to play songs in a nice order (it's a very simple RCA Lyra that doesn't do anything fancy like different folders or playlists). It's awfully nice not to have a random "after 12" dance song sandwiched between sublime works of Palestrina. I did have to resort to renaming everything... A1, A2, A3, etc for orchestral; B1,B2 etc for Bach choral pieces; C1, C2, etc. for counterpoint; DR1, etc for school dance type rock music; DW1, etc. for waltzes; P1, etc for songs from Patience; SM1, etc. for songs from the Sound of Music.

There must be somehing else besides my silly player... oh, yes, today I read the second half of a great book called (by its republisher) "How to Raise Good Catholic Children". It had a more poetic title when first published in the 50's by a mother of 7, but the new one is pretty descriptive. It's an encouraging book in the same way the families you see around our school are encouraging.

I also started making an Epiphany cake- well, so far only the frosting. Now that the kitchen is cleaned up from dinner, though, I'll see about the rest. Has anyone here ever tried whipping Egg Nog? Like whipped cream? I'm going to see if it works.

Merry 10th day of Christmas

Catholics just have to get used to being counter-cultural. Before Christmas, well, it's not Christmas yet. And then it finally gets here and everyone throws away their trees and wreaths at the beginning of the real party. Have you ever found yourself feeling silly wishing people a Merry Christmas after New Year's Day? But they never feel silly doing it the first of December...

(Of course, if I always avoided what feels silly, I would never wear anything but jumpers and polo shirts. I'm working on that one, honest.)

Tonight I went with my mother to the wake of my grandmother's friend. It was a good Irish wake, full of laughter and smiles and the occasional sympathetic nod- an occasion for lots of kisses from people who mistook me for my mother, and more from people who were trying to figure out which Golden I was. (I'm not, but it's nice to hear.)

Sorry if the loose grammar here offends anyone- it's mostly laziness and partially an effort to not be so pernickity about word use. (I live in a mostly ESL house, where my preference for syntactical integrity is not commonly shared, and is the object of many a rolled eye.)

God bless.
